Android and data.gov

I am ready to start my first application, and I wanted to grab some data from open web services in data.gov. However, it seems that all the web services they offer are SOAP based.

I traveled this question and I do not want to use ksoap2 if the general community is not satisfied with this. This question is also almost 2 years old, and something may exist now that I have not found through Google. (which is only ksoap2).
