Strength-based graph: 3D collision

Imagine a moving 3D power plot with colliding edges. How easy is it to write a specific physics engine to calculate the collision of an edge (string, rope) so that each object behaves like in the real world? Lines should bend, nodes should repel each other, etc. Accuracy beyond visual recognition of how “looks real” doesn't matter, it's a game.

Edit: Perhaps I forgot to mention that approximating edges, since multi-segmented strings are the only option I can think of.

And yes, is it possible to scale such physics to hundreds or thousands of edges?
