Java libraries that work with Microsoft Office documents but are not dependent on automation

By "automation independent" I mean that Microsoft Office is not required to install; not to mention interacting with a live instance of a Microsoft Office component. One such library is Aspose.Total for Java . Is there more there?

Another solution that I am considering is using OpenOffice.org. However, I'm not sure that I will encounter the same problems as with Microsoft Office, as detailed here .
