Mac versioning

Question

I am a student, and my methods of source management are mostly academic (HW assignments, 2-4 people, etc.).
So far I have used Subversion hosted in google code and used the eclipse plugin to manage my repository.

I recently heard about git, which I think should be synchronized between every two employees every time, and something called Mercurial. So basically my question has three parts:
Which version control system is recommended and what are the benefits of git? Is it worth it to study?
What is a good free host that will support this system?
What is the best tool to manage my storage? Is command line use better than the Eclipse plugin? or is there any other software that is recommended?

I use subversion at work, and people often don’t know how to manage it, distributed SCM reduces the need for an administrator if you do not need a central repository.
