How to simulate a calendar application?

Question

I need to create an application that will have a calendar component that will support almost all types of events that you can create in Outlook and / or iCal, and save them in a relational database.

I was wondering if there is a standard calendar model there or should I hack it myself. I looked at iCalendar, but it was more focused on communication. I am more interested in storing events in a database.

Or, if anyone knows of some good open source backup calendar that I can take a look at and find out.
