What to consider when starting SQL Server?

I have experience with MySQL, DB2, and Oracle, but aside from writing a few queries, I have never used SQL Server.

My question consists of three partners:

1) For the developer, what are some good β€œfree” client tools to view and why (β€œfree” I mean open source, free software or tools that come with SQL Server itself)?

2) I plan to run Developer or Express Edition on my workstation for development, as well as Standard or Enterprise Edition in test and production environments. What are the methods for transferring data between different servers and different versions?

3) Are there any common errors that someone like me (who is used to other database systems that I mentioned) might have encountered during development?

TIA

  • SQL Server Management Studio, which comes with SQL Server (any edition), or you can download it separately. SQL Server Profiler, which does not ship with Express.
  • Management Studio has database backup / restore tools. You can also consider the detach / attach method for db synchronization.
  • Hard to say. But if you had Mysql experience, you will be pleasantly surprised by SQL Server. UPDATE
    • , -, . , , , SQL Server 1 NULL- ( )
