What is the math for user interface aesthetics, like color harmony?

I need to develop a small tool inside my project, for example, the "Harmony color" color palette in Adobe Illustrator or Kuler - the user can select one or two colors, and based on this tool 4 or 5 "consistent" palettes are offered. Where can I find some documents, mathematical rules, or other premises?

This is commonly known as "colo (u) r theory" - there is a pretty good explanation of the various approaches at: http://www.colormatters.com/colortheory.html (If you are bigger, just google "color theory".)

In general, it's easy enough to create your own palettes using the above theory, although you can simplify your life by creating your own HSB / V talk function in RGB colo (u) r. (Again, your language / frame of choice may already have such a thing.)
