GAE vs S3 for storing images / images

My web service is powered by GAE, and I plan to provide a feature that allows users to upload their photos to share with others. Naturally, GAE is my first resort for storing images. But at the same time, I heard a lot about S3. I wonder if there is a comparison between the two in terms of image / image storage, cost, performance, etc. Has anyone done this before?
