preg_replace('#[^-a-zA-Z0-9_&; ]#', '', $abcd)
You may just need to avoid the "plus" sign with a backslash: \+.
\+
Add + to the list.
preg_replace('#[^-a-zA-Z0-9_&; +]#', '', $abcd)
