Are SharePoint Lists Malicious in an SOA-Based Enterprise?

My company moves from Client / Server applications (thick client applications that directly access databases) to Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) (thin or thick clients that invoke the web service, which then runs the business logic and invokes the database )

Part of this involves using SharePoint as our client (not our only client type, but the main one). I am watching Pluralsight learn about SharePoint, and I am starting to learn a lot about SharePoint lists.

SharePoint lists appear to be in the main body of SharePoint. However, they also seem to be a huge step backward architecturally. These are my problems:

  • Using these lists, I will have my SharePoint websites deleting data directly (just like with our two-tier client / server applications).
  • This confuses the multilayer data layer. Do I keep a list of clients in a SQL Server database? Or a SharePoint list? Or both? (let's say this is not so!) If both are, how can I store them in Sync?
  • If I store data in SharePoint lists, do I need my web services to use the SharePoint Client object model to retrieve lists (for clients other than SharePoint)?

In general, SharePoint lists look very bad. But I hear that this is one of the great benefits of SharePoint. (Although I know that there are things like resource management and permissions that are also useful in SharePoint.)
