How to send mail to php at scheduled time?

I want to create an application that allows users to send emails to be sent at any time. just write an email message and write it so that the server sends it at the specified time. I am using zend framework. How to do this in php? Can this be done with cron? If so, what are the disadvantages of using cron?

I run a cron job every minute and check if there are any emails ready for scheduling. A quote from the forum thread below gives instructions on how to start cron every minute.
