Are SVG graphics suitable for playing in a browser?

Are SVG graphics a viable option for playing in a browser with google-maps style interface? This will include zooming in and out and scrolling in two dimensions over a very long distance.

For example, a client may request a certain area to be drawn from the server, and instead of the server returning the generated image for this section, it would return a series of SVG gzipped images and their locations in the requested area. Then the user could zoom in and out without capturing new tiles from the server, as SVGs are scalable.

Would it be better than generating pngs or jpegs and sending back tiles? Would this work well if there were a lot of clients requesting images everywhere? Will it work well on the client? What are the disadvantages of this approach?
