How to create a YouTube or eBay interface for iPad?

Question

Wanting to award a +500 bounty for a working example.

The YouTube interface for the iPad is quite interesting, the video grid. eBay on the iPad has a similar grid interface.

I am interested to know what is called this style? Are there examples of projects that demonstrate how to achieve this, or is it fairly simple to write?
