How to separate a large ASP.NET MVC3 application?

Question

I have seen various approaches to splitting an MVC3 application, but most of them feel “hacked” or require additional dependencies, such as portable areas from MvcContrib. I remember that there was a way to split a large application into separate modules in MVC2 Beta or RC, but this function does not work in the release. So, is there any recommended way to separate large projects?

PS I saw Orchard. But its module infrastructure is too complex for my needs.
