How to debug Javascript in older browsers

Forgive me if this was asked elsewhere. I have not yet been able to find a good answer. I have Javascript code that works fine in the latest version of Firefox. However, the browser of the older browser uses the fuzzy behavior that is used on our site. For reasons beyond my control, I need to support this hacked version of the browser, which is actually embedded in another piece of software.

I shudder in the dark from the cause of the problems. I don’t see the error console and, of course, tools like Firebug are a pipe dream. How to effectively debug browser related issues? The old guessing and verification method will cost too much time.

You can use Firebug Lite in IE6 + and earlier versions of FF / Opera / Webkit. The most useful feature of Firebug Lite, in my opinion, is probably logging capabilities ( console.log).

Checking JavaScript for syntax errors before you even load the page with a tool like JSLint can save you some headaches. In extreme cases, reliable is window.alertalways present.

It depends on the browser.

You might want to check out Firebug Lite for Firebug-like features in older and non-Mozilla browsers.
