Java Workflow Solutions

Question

We are currently using a consistent workflow for processing documents. We have a total of 10 different workflow steps. We reanalyzed the workflow and realized that we can restructure the workflow to process several stages of the workflow in parallel. Basically, we can process steps 1,2,3,4 in parallel, wait until steps 1-4 are complete and then perform step 5, and then perform steps 6, 7, 8, 9 in parallel, until steps 6-9 will not be completed, and then finally process step 10. If we could implement this new workflow, we could significantly increase the processing performance.

My question is, what open source Java projects would you recommend? Do they usually support what I stated above?

I used jBPM and it is pretty nice. It has parallel processing (forking) and expects tasks (unification) of the workflow to be completed.

The latest version supports standard notation for business processes - BPMN 2.0
