CSS Sprite Base Image Size

Does it matter how long and widely used the image is when using CSS sprites? I noticed that the SO sprite image is one long image with all the sprites on top of each other.

Thanks to the png filtering / compression algorithm , large rows of uniformly colored pixels barely affect file size.
