Create a Blog Network with WordPress 3

Question

I want to create a network of sites based on the WordPress platform. Apartment Therapy is a prime example of how I would like to implement a network. They use unique domains, not subdomains or directories.

Click "Technology" in the top navigation bar for Unplggd, click "Kids for Ohdeedoh", etc.

Can you give me your opinion on the best way to do this with WordPress 3.0.x multisite?

I read a few WordPress multipage posts that give me a hint, but I want to build the architecture for the first time.
