Rails standalone HTML5 database

Question

Are there any examples, gems, or plugins that could be a good starting point for a Rails application that uses a standalone database? Bonus points when it comes to synchronizing an offline database with an online database.

Or, would you rather use JavaScript for this?

I recommend watching Rack :: Offline

It handles manifest creation and has other great features. But, everyone said, you will need to enter nitty-gritty with "direct javascript".
