How to blur the base background image in the area of the modal window with transparency?

I added a modal window with transparency to the website, and I would like to apply, for example, Gaussian blur to the background of the window, just like the rendering effect of Windows vista aero. Is it possible to do this? And How?

Thank! William

What about a dynamic width / height widget that loads an image, blurred its filters and pretty accurately sets the contained element in the z-index layer, above the modal subclass and below the modal content. Alternatively, http://plugins.jquery.com/project/blurimage , or http://www.nihilogic.dk/labs/imagefx/ also looks promising.

EDIT: in response to your comment on partial image blur
