DICOM Basics for Volumetric Data

I looked at some of the DICOM standards and Wikipedia pages (and all DICOM themes on SO), but without digging into the doc (ugh) file structure, I get confused what exactly is stored in the DICOM file for scanning containing 3D / 4D / 5D data . I only need a review.

Take MRI as an example. The DICOM file contains

  • set of raw 2D images taken from different angles
  • stack of slices forming a three-dimensional voxel dataset
  • full 3D dataset

In other words, does DICOM include any subsequent processing of the raw images captured by the imaging machine?

As for 4D, apparently this is just a set of several 3D data sets, each “frame” is a separate data set?

There are so many different options in the DICOM standard, along with vendor extensions, that most things are possible.

However, most of the three-dimensional DICOM datasets I came across are two-dimensional images. For further processing, this depends solely on the image processing device.

If you are looking for a freely available DICOM library, you can try GDCM , I was quite pleased with it.

The original DICOM MR format contains a single, two-dimensional image. This format is still widely supported, it is likely that you have one. If this is what you have, then you will want to collect all the images in a series to create your volume.
