WordPress: importing multiple categories?

I am working on a Wordpress based directory site and I need to import categories and members from an existing website. WordPress currently has an importer tool that is said to allow you to import categories ... but it's in WXR format.

As far as I understand, WXR is an XML file, but I'm not sure which format is used to import a category and a member (if possible).

I looked for different sources to solve this issue, but did not find anything.

I have over 70 categories and over 600 business members to import. I would appreciate any advice on importing multiple categories and members into WordPress.
