What is RFC 2396?

Can someone tell me the meaning of the term RFC 2396 related to NSURL or something like that?

RFC 2396 describes the syntax and format of the URI.

Wikipedia has a good overview in the RFC sequence that defined and refined the URI specification.

The term RFC itself means “Request for Comments,” which sounds like it's just a proposal, but most of them are in fact the official industry standard.

Wikipedia: RFC 1 RFC, Domain Name System (RFC 1591).
