What is the best way to learn the elevator if you do not have experience in web programming?

I am going to access DB (postgre) from my applications in scala. I was asked to use the elevator for this. Since I have no experience in web programming and working with databases, it is not surprising that I really got confused with the book Lift.

Can someone suggest me another way to start?
