Ok, I did my search on Google and found this article to help me with my small application. However, this one is getting old, so I just need to ask if I really need add-ons and adwhirl accounts and banks to serve simple Google ads? As far as I understand, I could use simple adsense .. if my application was webapp, but it is not. Are all these steps still necessary?

I just set up AdMob in my Android app for the first time last night. I used their developer guide and it was really easy to get all the settings and work. It took only 30-45 minutes to complete (in the application that I already wrote).

I didn’t want it to be too complicated.

If you just want Admob or adsense ads, you certainly don't need to use AdWhirl. The main reason for using media intermediaries and other ad networks is to get more profitable ads (or make sure you get a faster fill rate).
