Series of images (animation) via Google Maps

Question

I am new to Google map api. My goal is to overlay a series of transparent PNGs onto the map for a period of time.

I am wondering if a good approach to this JavaScript is a good start, or if it will not be too difficult to make some code in asp.net

Also, I'm curious if any Google Api v2.x or v3.x map is suitable for this task.

I recommend avoiding v3 for live sites until its syntax becomes more stable.
