How to organize spaces inside Confluence (wiki)?

My company will use Confluence to store and share our knowledge base in our IT systems and can be used to cover topics from hardware administration to problems that programmers face.

I am curious how best to create global spaces. Is it better to have one large space for the entire IT department, or should the information be divided into several spaces oriented to a specific domain?

My concern is that splitting information into several smaller spaces will impede the ability to link between related topics that can be divided into different spaces. For example, we may have 2 spaces to cover our site and our main internal system. However, there are many matches between the website applications and the main internal system.

Any advice that can be provided will be greatly appreciated!
