The correct way to resize the image to install on the screen ldpi, hdpi

What is the correct way to determine the size of an image on an hdpi screen compared to an ldpi screen.

For example, 89 * 80 png is displayed perfectly, with text on my droid 2 .... but how should I resize the image on a smaller shielded droid? Can I manually change the image and put it in the ldpi folder or will it do it automatically?
