Best practice for configuring C # com objects

I need to develop an extension for an outdated application that relies on COM objects.

My extension is implemented as com-server-in-dll (.net assembly) with MSVS and installed in the [program files] [company] folder (distributed as msi file).

What is the best practice for setting this up: put app.config in the installation folder (I suspect that it would be incorrect to download, since the host process does not have app.config at all) or adhere to the practice of old days for working with the registry system?

What would you personally prefer?
