Can I detect other iOS devices via Bluetooth in the background?

Question

I would like to be able to detect other iOS devices via Bluetooth while my application is in the background. Can I use Bonjour or Game Kit to open this while my app is in the foreground?

Can I do this and hide the notification if a compatible device is found?

Also, could I work in the background while playing sound and make this detection?

This is not possible while your application is paused. From the iOS Application Programming Guide :
