ASP.NET developer wants to get into SharePoint - 2007 or 2010?

I have been working with ASP.NET for about 5 years, and I'm looking for SharePoint development.

Would it be more appropriate to first step on SP 2007 or just dive right into SP 2010?

It seems that training SP 2007 will give me a better understanding of the β€œhistory” and will expand the possibilities of my work.

What do we think? Is comprehension of SP 2007 mandatory for any SP developer at this point?

thank

Thanks for the helpful and encouraging answers. It seems like a unanimous recommendation is to skip SP 2007 and go straight to SP 2010, since dev tools are much better, so I will probably do it :)

SharePoint 2010 is a completely new architecture and fundamentally different. For example, the SharePoint service provider is no longer there and a sandbox has been added.

SharePoint 2010 is a much simpler way to get started, as others have said. In terms of analogy, today there is no big reason to learn COM + programming. You can work with .NET and be happy most of the time.

The following are some real good resources to help you get started with SharePoint 2010 ...
