Pay attention to the list of Xcode characters (NSPopUpButton directly above the editor, to the right of the recently edited documents), it shows <No selected symbol>when you left the area of any characters that it lists, but then when you click on it that option does not exist. Is there a trick to do this “placeholder” magic, or is there a setter somewhere I don't see?
