How to handle exceptions when creating a FileStream

I have such a function that I would like to reorganize

Just wrap the code in which you want to catch exceptions in the try..except block:

function MyFunction(...): Boolean;
var
  Stream: TFileStream;
begin
  Result := False;
  try
    Stream := TFileStream.Create(...);
    try
      // more code
      Result := ...
    finally
      Stream.Free;
    end;
  except
    // handle exception
  end
end;

All information about exception handling consists of two parts:

  • finallydesigned to clean resources; you often see this in business logic.
  • exceptdesigned to respond to a specific exception (and get rid of state logic through function results and intermediate variables); you hardly see it in business logic.

In your case:

For some reason, most people abuse the exception-ending combination. Correct sequence

try 
  // allocate resource here
  try 
  finally
    // free resource here
  end;
except
  // handle exception here
end;

This allows you to catch exceptions in the constructor and destructor.
