Is Watir adoption planning for our UI testing needs the right tool?

We are using Qtp as a testing tool and are currently planning to upgrade to an open source testing tool. For this purpose, we reset to Watir and Selenium as two potential tools. We did some research on these two products and liked Watir for its neat and powerful API and ease of use. We are only looking at testing IE; therefore, the cross-browser support provided by Selenium is probably not that important.

But, as my research on Vatira progresses, there is one thing in Vatira that bothers me a bit. These are the losses that I see about the product. Most of the articles, success stories and quotes are quite old - say, before 2009. In 2010, nothing was interesting to write about Watir. To add to this, I heard this story that Webdriver is going to replace Watir. Although I could not find many articles about Watir-Webdriver, I saw this article about watir, which bothers me somewhat, since it says that watir is DEAD.

We do not want to start with a product that is probably already dead or dying.

Can someone tell me what exactly is happening in Vatire and what is a roadmap?
