Running an open source application?

Question

I have a prosperity application written at home in PHP for collaboration (Basecamp crashes). We are looking for a way to add chat chat (facebook or gmail style chat), is there an open source solution that we could use with excellent documentation and an easy to use API?

Platform: Linux, PHP 5, MySQL, SmartyPHP, and Zend Framework.
