Cannot open Visual Studio 2008 files after installing 2010

I installed VS 2010 Professional on a machine that already had Professional 2008. Now I cannot open any project in 2008 in VS 2008, even if I open 2008 and use the Open menu command. However, I am loading a solution or project — Windows Explorer double-click Submit or Explicit Open — the VS 2010 Conversion Wizard always launches.

I have tried the following things:

  • File Association Recovery in VS 2008
  • Make VS Launcher, and both devenv.exe files run as Adminstrator, setting their properties.
  • Creating Send To files 2008.

Nothing works. The only way to work with solutions and projects of 2008 is to convert them in 2010. Any ideas?

Mea culpa! Error decision files were not even 2008, they were VS 2005, which I no longer have on my machine. I thought they were 2008 files.

Interestingly, you do not have the opportunity to convert them in 2008, and you are forced to switch directly to the 2010 format.

Sorry for misleading.

Once you hide the VS2010 solution using the conversion wizard, you can no longer open it with VS2008, because the format is no longer supported.
