How to write an application to connect an Android device to a USB device of a USB host

I have a standalone GPS data receiver in my car that can work as a USB host or device. (Its a USB device of class 0x00h). I am currently connecting to it through the WM 6.5 application running on my Palm Treo 750.

I would like to port my WM 6.5 application to an Android phone. (I do not have a specific Android phone, I would like it to be as general as possible).

GUI replication is not so difficult, but it’s hard for me to get started with USB communication.

I would appreciate it if someone could give me an example or an appropriate tutorial.

thank
