I made the c extension from a python script, which was quite time consuming. The code itself is well tested and simple. The extension c is called with several large lists, and then performs some clever arithmetic and returns several new lists. The c extension is 100% self-sufficient, it does not use any other c-functions and does not use any of the python-object methods (it uses these standard Python methods: PyFloat_AsDouble, PyList_GetItem, PyList_Size, PyList_New, Py_BuildValue, PyList_Append). So far, I have only used it in a multi-threaded environment.
Today I started using it in a multi-threaded GUI environment, and all hell broke. I have some test cases that I use for debugging, and, oddly enough, the smaller ones go through ok, while the larger ones cause bus errors and segmentation errors (the GUI completely crashes and the window appears "Problem for Python "in OS X), The problem is that the c extension is not thread safe? If so, how can I make this thread safe? I tried to deal with the subject, but in fact I did not find any good information that I can understand about. I checked this and this page , but I really don't understand what they are saying. What type of code does GIL need and which does not?
