Is there a size limit on the ipad application?

Question

I know that the maximum size of an app in an app store is 2 GB. and we can only download 20 MB of applications via 3G and unlimitedly via Wi-Fi.

Regarding an application that will not be placed in the application store, is there any limit?

Also, is there any guru of any performance issues when the application is large? what is the ideal limit, if any, I am not talking about the physical limit.
