A reverse proxy is used to add features to the web server, such as load balancing, security, and caching.
In order for the hacker to take advantage of this, they would have to deceive the user by going to a different address from your real one (phishing), and then using a reverse proxy to make it look like they were on a real site.
Using a locally installed application or virus, you can modify the hosts file or intercept DNS queries to redirect traffic to a real address, but this is much less common than phishing.

A reverse proxy is a proxy server that is installed on the server network or on network equipment. Typically, reverse proxies are used in front of web servers. All connections coming from the Internet addressed to one of the web servers are routed through a proxy server, which can process the request itself or send the request in full or in part to the main web servers.
