Vs2010 compiled MFC application running in win2k

The company I work for has a large MFC-based application. We are currently using vs2008, but for the next version we hope to upgrade to vs2010, mainly for the new C ++ 0x features. Unfortunately, we have a very small number of Citrix clients that adhere to the Win2k server due to licensing costs.

Today I found that there is a problem with compiling native vs2010 applications on win2k, and someone posted several solutions here.

Can I use Visual Studio 2010 in the C ++ compiler with Visual Studio 2008 in the C ++ Runtime Library?

I tried the FAPO method with a simple MFC application and it doesn’t work (it does for a console application), presumably because MFC also has links to non-win2k compatible libraries? I was going to try to prepare my own crt, but MS did not provide the files to create it.

Can I spend my time trying to figure out how to get our application to work under win2k and is this just a case of either going back to VS2008 or targeting 2008 from 2010?

The need to support such an old operating system seems unreasonable, although I understand that supporting legacy systems is part of our profession.
