What are the alternatives to APC?

APC (as in http://us3.php.net/manual/en/book.apc.php ) means an alternative PHP cache. What is the alternative - is there another built-in caching framework in PHP?

I believe this was an alternative to the proprietary (and commercial) Zend Cache, which was in the late 90s and early 2000s. Currently, there are several different accelerators (each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages), but in the early 2000s, the main one was Zend Cache. So I would suggest that (the timelines look right) that APC should have become an alternative to Zend Cache (open source and free alternative) ...
