Saving and loading program state (Java)

Suppose you have little time, and you are looking for a program with certain functions, and you will find it, except that it lacks one function - it cannot save and load its state. Is it possible to achieve this at the OS level or with another program that can take all this, write to a file, and then later load it back into memory? How?

In particular, for me this concerns a Java program, but you can get additional information on this topic.

One (heavy and light) solution could be to use VirtualPC and install the program on a virtual OS.
