Website Strategies

I’ve been on Google for several days now. When you create non-profit websites, what is the best strategy for cross-browser testing? I use Windows 7 and Textpad to develop my HTML / CSS / JavaScript / PHP - i.e. No Dreamweaver, kompozer, etc.

I am currently testing Firefox 3.6 and IE8. The last time I checked it was 80% of the browser market. I do not have Safari and Google Chrome installed, but I would like to know how much of the browser market will β€œbehave” with my site ( http://www.simoncatlin.co.uk ), especially since I use a lot of timers, measurement screen, etc.

I am not improving, but I would like to know how close to 100% I get.

Thanks in advance

Simon Kathleen

You need to think about your application and your user base. For example, historically IE has been installed on many home computers. Most regular Internet users will never go and install another browser, because they do not care.

There are many people who really care. These people tend to install a new browser (or two or three). They are usually much more technological, and their expectations are very different.

I found that IE7 is a useful LCD for moderately complex websites. I have no resources for exhaustive browser testing. That was the way I began to notice that it’s easy to do things that don’t work on IE7

For non-profit sites, at least those that I worked on, there is usually a decree such as "this is necessary for working with FF" or "IE is not supported." You can check with your employer.
