Are apps locked or password protected acceptable on the Apple AppStore?

The simple question is, can I host an application on the Apple AppStore that only works for those with a username and password? This is for a client who wants to distribute their application only to a select number of people. An Enterprise license is not an option, and while an ad-hoc distribution I would rather go through the store.

Since the material is semi-sensitive, I will need to minimize the description (for example, this application is only for XYZ users and requires a password), and the screenshot is only on one screen of the login page.

Does anyone know of any store apps like this?

These applications are more easily rejected, but Apple does not explicitly prohibit this. You will need to provide them with input for verification during the application approval process.
