CMS for user application

We are creating a custom application using LAMP with P being PHP. We also need a CMS to manage various aspects of the site. Two options for CMS:

  • Create a complete CMS from scratch

  • Extend your existing open source CMS to suit our needs. Thus, we can use some functions from the box and others that we will build ourselves.

I would like to receive your feedback on the following

  • What are your impressions of option number 2?

  • Which CMS would you recommend so that we can further customize and expand for our use?

  • What are the best ways to integrate a user application with other external CMS?

I really like the MVC approach for CMS (you mentioned the extension) and PyroCMS is built on Codeigniter . He cannot (out of the box) serve all your needs, but he can easily. Its worth a look at least.

Currently, a whole set of CMS is available, each with its own pros and cons.

I assume that the first step in your case is to make a list of functions that you:

  • MUST HAVE
  • SHOULD HAVE
  • MAY HAVE

Once you have this list, you can compare existing CMS to find out which one best suits your needs.

There is no better CMS (otherwise everyone will use the same).

Larger applications can be configured as modules, this is similar to many other mainstream CMS, it is just that in ModX web management makes code management a simple task.
