As Samir Segal said, the emulator really takes a lot of time. First, it displays βAndroidβ in a small regular font, then it moves on to a larger, more beautiful, shiny font, and then it loads the OS. After the OS boots up, give it a few more seconds, and it should go directly to the application that you launched.
It takes a lot of time, but as soon as you download it, you can leave it open and run the application again and again. It only takes a few seconds each time from now on.
