How to hone yourself from an IDE to a text editor?

I have been using IDEs for different languages for many years (VS, IntelliJ, Eclipse, NetBeans, FlashDevelop, etc.), and I always found them slow and cluttered (yes, I know that windows can be hidden, rearranged and that no). I recently learned and became somewhat experienced with VIM and used it for as many projects as possible.

My problem is that I am very attached to the various functions provided by the IDE (intellisense, refactoring, inline documents, the list goes on). Does anyone have any advice on how I can overcome these crutches and become truly free from the IDE?

Should we buy an expensive drive only to quickly launch the β€œmodern” IDE, when uber-3l337 UN1x c0derz happily runs EMACS on 386 with 32 MB of RAM? Well, there is no doubt that many coders are extremely productive without an IDE, many of them more than IDE jockeys. More power to them. But if you prefer to use IDEs and coding, how do you make a living, should a few hundred dollars be a criminal? I think it's up to you, but it's worth considering.
