Sprite CSS Generator for Ruby on Rails Project

I am currently working on a large, highly profitable Ruby on Rails site and in order to reduce page load time, we are looking at how to write background images. There seem to be a lot of tools, but many of them are in the early stages of development, and many of them do not support some of the features that we need.

Features that are important to us:

  • x or y repeating
  • with our rake build
  • transparency
  • automatically creates sprite image and css
  • mature
  • easy to maintain
  • open source

If it was written in Ruby, it will be a bonus, but it is not essential if it can integrate with the rake / cap setting.

Are there any css help tools that fit most (all?) Of these criteria?

One big negative associated with Chris' suggestion of using uri data through Jammit is that he does not support IE6 / 7.
