Free RCS for Windows 7

I use RCS (version control system) from MKS Source Integrity for several old projects. I need to upgrade to a new computer with Windows 7. The old version that I have is not installed on Windows 7, and the new version of the software is very expensive.

What is the best free or easy RCS source for Windows 7? Also, is it compatible with the MKS Toolkit that I'm still going to install?

Git (MSysGit) runs on Windows 7 and is free. There is a learning curve related to Git that, in my opinion, is worth your while (especially for distributed VCS), but some may disagree. These packages come with bashboth the client ssh(useful synchronization with remote repositories).

EDIT: For RCS, in particular, there is an RCS package via Cygwin or an independent package from the Purdue RCS main page (the latter says: "The latest PC (OS / 2 DOS Win95 NT), but I think it can work on Windows 7, I am sure that the Cygwin package works on Win 7).

On Windows 7, the 64-bit version of SETUP32.EXE fails "incompatible with the version of Windows you are running on"

My workaround:

  • Copy the sintcm32.dll file from the 32-bit machine to the c: \ windows \ syswow64 folder.
  • In Explorer, double-click the .pj file, set the description to "MKS Source Integrity Project / Sandbox File" and specify "[network location] \ mkssi \ mkssi32.exe"
  • Create shortcuts for the menu "[network location] \ mkssi \ mkssi32.exe", etc.
